Famous Interior Designers

As more creative professionals decide to become interior designers and as Americans have celebrated their work more and more in magazines and on television, some interior designers have earned celebrity status. Three contemporary interior designers, Genevieve Gorder, Thom Filicia and Nate Berkus have catapulted themselves into the public eye by showcasing their innovative styles repeatedly in the mass media.

Genevieve Gorder first unleashed her brand of "big risk / big reward" interior design on American television viewers as one of the original cast members of the hit series Trading Spaces. As the small budget series captured huge ratings numbers, Gorder built a reputation for designing clever and unusual interiors using found objects on a limited budget. Seeking inspiration from everyday experiences, some of Gorder's most provocative designs started out from a bowl of soup and an artichoke heart. This famous interior designer has leveraged her on-screen success into her own television series, as well as a thriving private interior design firm, gg Studios. Expect to see Gorder's imprint on a line of housewares and kitchen accessories in the near future.

Thom Filicia designs interiors with a more elegant touch than Gorder, and his influence has started to make a similar impact on popular culture.

As a charter member of the "Fab Five," this presenter of the hit series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy spreads his vision of "classic simplicity." Viewers watch Filicia transform bland interiors over the course of an afternoon, showcasing his ability to quickly pinpoint stylish solutions for every design challenge. That efficiency attracts big name clients to Filicia's interior design firm, where he and his team have developed a reputation for completing important projects fast. This famous interior designer's clients include Fortune 500 CEO's as well as leaders in the worlds of entertainment and politics.

One entertainment leader, Oprah Winfrey, made a huge impact on the life of a Chicago interior designer. While working in a series of auction houses, Nate Berkus absorbed the techniques that master designers used to craft elegant and functional pieces. After launching his interior design firm at age 24, his work gained attention through a series of high profile clients and some commercial assignments designing restaurants and office spaces. But this famous interior designer's on-screen charm earned him frequent guest spots on local news and cable television before his career-making break as a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. Since then, Berkus fields requests from around the world for "Oprah's favorite interior designer" to work wonders in their own homes.
