Feng Shui decorating helps you to have a home or office geared to your individual taste, yet one that helps to bring balance and harmony into your life. There are simple tips you can use with Feng Shui decorating to help you create an aesthetically pleasing look.

In the Feng Shui principle of decorating, color is perceived as having energy and you can use it in many ways to enhance your well-being. Feng Shui is the ancient art of placing colors and objects in your living or working space to bring about balance and well-being to everything you do. This principle is based on the theory that spiritual and physical health exists where there is a good flow of energy, or chi. If this energy is blocked, then stress or illness could result.

When using Feng Shui decorating, choose vibrant and energetic colors to give you and everyone around you more energy. Central to Feng Shui is the idea that all life is based on five main elements:

• Earth
• Metal
• Fire
• Wood
• Water

Each of these elements is associated with certain qualities that can enhance and nurture your life.

Red is a color with the longest wavelength and in Feng Shui decorating, it can help you feel more energetic and alive. You would not paint all of your walls red, though, because this could be stressful in itself. You can decorate with touches of red or shades of the color to simulate fire in the room. Something as simple as adding a red candle or red flowers to a centrepiece can really be effective.

• Green signifies life, harmony and freshness. It is a calming color coming from the element of wood. This is a good choice of color for bedrooms or any room where you want to portray the feeling of nourishment and nurturing.
• Blue is a magical color that uplifts, yet relaxes. It gives the impression of warmer climates and represents a potential for learning and understanding.
