Feng Shui - Bring Good Energy Into Your Life

Curiosity is what draws people to feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement of objects. Its purpose is to generate positive energy, called Chi, in everyday life and to maximize that positive energy in all aspects of one's environment -- health, wealth and relationships, in office, home or garden.

Feng shui is strictly followed in the architecture of Chinese buildings, and has gained a toehold in the United States. Although the foundation for feng shui is in Buddhism, it's not a religion.

While some feng shui solutions are as simple as using common sense, such as moving a chair or couch around to create more floor space, other beliefs are more subjective. For example, it's bad feng shui to have the front door linked in a direct line to the back door, because the Chi will flow directly out of your home.

Applying the Bagua

There are various schools of feng shui, such as the Compass or Form (an interior design focus) schools, that use different practices to improve the flow of Chi. The simplest form of feng shui is called the Bagua.

The Bagua can be used to rearrange the furniture items in your home. The octagon-shaped diagram is a guide on how to properly apply feng shui principles to the environment, which in turn should improve the flow of Chi.

Feng shui practitioners will view your home and take a record of the energy detected in your home, then suggest ways to rid your home or life of disturbances.

The cost of a consultation depends on the practitioner. Then you have to gauge how much money you are willing to spend on redecorating.

Even if you can't afford to feng shui your home from scratch, you can utilize what you already have by applying the Bagua. You can apply the Bagua to your entire house using each section or individual room in your home as a quadrant of the Bagua diagram.

There are only three entrances into the Bagua - knowledge, career and benefactors. The entrance is the threshold or doorway of your room or house.

Align the Bagua according to the location of your doorway. If there is a wall at the corner of your doorway, start in the knowledge quadrant, but if your doorway evenly splits both walls, start in the career quadrant. You then observe what you have in each quadrant and how it relates or conflicts with the Bagua and make changes accordingly.

In the bedroom, for example, it's a feng shui practice to place the bed in a command position. You should be able to see the doorway clearly from your bed, and not be surprised by an intruder.

It's considered bad feng shui to place the headboard directly under a windowsill because the Chi can flow directly from you out the window. You want Chi to flow in a circular motion around your room.

Positive Chi should also be abundant in your bedroom. To spice up your relationship or ignite your love life, use colors in your linens to reflect what you desire.

Red will bring a hot fling and white represents purity, but for a long-lasting romance display pink. Place decorative items, such as candles or flowers, in sets of two to represent you and your mate. If you're married, remove all photos of your children and replace them with photos of you and your partner together. The bedroom should revolve around only the relationship between you and your partner. This will help keep your mind on romance, so you don't neglect the relationship.

Everything placed in the home or room is done with the intent of receiving an outcome.

Workplace Feng Shui

Needs in the workplace usually revolve around succeeding and achieving goals. Even so, it's usually a very stressful place and negative energy may be lurking. To generate more positive Chi, you can apply feng shui principles to your office, cubicle or desk space using the Bagua.

In the career section, use a black keyboard holder or seat cushion. The knowledge section should reflect your education, such as a framed copy of your degree or a memento that reflects your educational background.

The family section reflects congeniality with your colleagues, so a company gift may be appropriate for this spot. Use the color green for wealth or a plant to represent growth and prosperity.

The fame section should attract acknowledgment from your company, so place a name plate or business cards (facing out) to acknowledge your status.

The marriage section can be hidden in your office. For loved ones use a photograph, and for those you don't like in the workplace, place a mirror in their direction to reflect their negative energy.

The children section, adjacent to marriage, is a place you can be creative. If you have children, place something they made for you in this location.

The benefactors section should be a reminder of a destination you want to travel to, or reflection of the people who are helpful in your life. If your computer is in the center of your desk, then place a mirror underneath the computer to reflect negative energy. A glass-top desk is very negative in feng shui because it allows all the Chi to escape.
